Frege: Grundlagen

These are the core lectures for first-year mathematic and philosophy students. In weeks 1-7, we’ll consider, among other things, Frege’s attack on Mill’s empiricism, Frege’s views on number ascriptions, the ‘Julius Caesar’ problem, and Frege’s attempt at a logicist reduction of arithmetic to Hume’s Principle, and ultimately to his ill-fated theory of extensions. The last lecture (week 8) will discuss practical issues relating to Prelims and exam technique (we’ll look at some of the Frege questions from the TT17 Intro to Philosophy paper, available on Oxam)
